He may well have achieved fame in Amsterdam, but Rembrandt was born and brought up in Leiden, and established himself as a painter there. His studies and subjects while at the Latin School already presaged many of his later themes, and the cosmopolitan climate of the industrial city of Leiden provided an excellent environment in which he could develop his talent. And in Leiden Rembrandt saw the light that he would later elevate to mastery.
Together with the city council and other groups in Leiden, Tinker developed an elaborated vision, ideas and a plan of approach. These produced the renovation of his birthplace, the bringing to life of the Latin School, a visitors’ centre, theme markets, the ‘Rembrandt Trail’, a film festival, exhibitions and much, much more.
