a fresh breeze

through the depot

The Dutch soil is filled to the brim with interesting traces of the past that tell us how our ancestors lived. Yet, once excavated by archaeologists, most finds end up in a depot. This was also the case in the province of South Holland. A crying shame, for many of these objects are truly worth their while. And so the South Holland House of National Heritage asked us to design a depot of discoveries in the attic of Villa Rijswijk, a reconstructed third century farmer's house, situated next to the Archeon.

We designed a surreal depot of discoveries that'll give you the feeling that all findings have only just been unpacked by the archaeologist. The display shelves defy the laws of gravity and creep up the attic walls, leaving the middle space free for lab tables, where visitors can get to work, including carrying out dating and reconstruction. And, did we mention that beautiful film at the entrance? Or the spectacular Grave of Wassenaar?
