tower tribunal announces its ruling

the shadow of anything crooked can never be straight

De Oldehove is the icon of Leeuwarden. Leeuwarden decided it wanted to rival Groningen with its Martini Tower with this crooked and leaning tower. But it never came to pass. By the time the tower was 10 metres high it had already begun to subside. So it was that around 500 years ago the construction of the tower was brought to a halt, when the tower had only grown to 40 metres. And for at least as long a time, the question has been asked: how could this construction project have gone so badly wrong?

Visitors to the tower encounter Taeke. The tower keeper had had enough of all the speculation, and convened a tower tribunal. Various different people give their arguments for their own version of the truth in a multimedia show. That the builder of the tower and St. Barbara could never come to an agreement is perhaps no surprise. But that Taeke should try to solve the dispute in that way…? The show is presented on the first floor of the tower, and is a part of the first phase of the renovation. In phase 2 (starting in 2011), the complete design will be realized.
