making human rights tangible
a great gesture for a great theme
Everyone’s fundamental rights take centre stage at the South Holland Resistance Museum (Verzetsmuseum Zuid-Holland). Tinker was asked to redesign a part of the exhibition.
The goal was to open up the collection from the Second World War and the stories behind it more effectively, so that the ‘Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ proclaimed in 1948 would be brought more clearly into the limelight. A link to contemporary conflicts facilitates empathy with the issues.
Together with the museum, Tinker drew up a phased master plan for the redesign of the whole museum.
In order to maximize the space provided for the collection and as an impressive gesture, a long story wall has been realized. The articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights lead the visitor to the heart of the museum. Themes such as the resistance, tyranny, collaboration and apathy are illustrated there using striking items from the collection, penetrating photographs, dazzling quotations and rare pieces of film. Refugees from all periods tell their stories in the seclusion of a vault.
